The Roman Mint was established as a temple of a Roman God named Luno Moneta - the word "money" is derived from his name. Each coin was struck by hand, therefore no two coins are identical.
On the obverse of most Roman Coins is an engraved portrait of an  emperor that ruled at the time. Those coins emphasized the authority of each emperor and reminded soldiers who was in control of their pay.
On the reverse side are family honors, religious or military related icons. Those icons vary based on the believes of each emperor.
